Out-of-the-Box Double Opt In Question

SOLVE

Hey there everyone!

Question regarding the Hubspot out-of-the-box double opt in:

If I have a subscription link in my email footer (so to the preference center) and I have the double opt-in feature "ON" I don't understand what happens to people who do not consent.

Will Hubspot disallow / block me from sending to those who do not complete the double opt-in flow? (Don't click the link in the 2nd email, delete it etc...) I found KB wording is supre vague on this. https://knowledge.hubspot.com/marketing-email/set-up-double-opt-in-for-emails

Thanks!

@TLarson3 the subscription confirmation link is the link that is behind the email confirmation button and takes you to the "Thank you for your confirmation" page; it is not the one that takes a recipient to the preference page.

There is no connection at all between the preference page and the double opt-in.

If the double opt-in is enabled, for US contacts that receive the double opt-in email, do not confirm (and are not exempt due to previously received emails etc - see the exceptions in the article), they will be dropped from marketing emails. In other words, a net new US contact must confirm the double opt-in to receive further emails. You would have to exclude forms or pages in the double opt in settings if you want to exempt contacts converting on certain pages from the process.

Out-of-the-Box Double Opt In Question

SOLVE

Hi @TLarson3,

The important thing to understand is that subscription type status and email confirmation status are entirely unrelated. With the GDPR settings (legal basis required) enabled, yes, both are required for a contact to receive emails. But one does not affect the other.

A checked consent box on a form or a choice made on a preference page do not have any effect on the confirmation status (double opt-in) of a contact. An email confirmation only happens when a contact clicks the confirmation link in the double opt-in email or is manually marked as confirmed. A contact cannot confirm their email on the preference page.

With the default double opt-in enabled, contacts who submit a form, receive the double opt-in email but do not confirm it will be dropped from future emails, see here: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/marketing-email/set-up-double-opt-in-for-emails#send-opt-in-email-to-i...

When double opt-in is enabled, contacts who have not confirmed opt-in will be dropped from any marketing emails:

The nuances are explained further down on that page, such as:

Contacts who were sent marketing emails from your HubSpot account before double opt-in was enabled will be considered confirmed and remain eligible to receive emails from you.

Out-of-the-Box Double Opt In Question

Thanks @karstenkoehler -

I am curious though, because they also have this part in that article:

"If your account has data privacy settings turned on and the email includes a subscription confirmation link, contacts who haven't confirmed opt-in will not be automatically dropped from marketing emails."

Wouldn't that mean that if I have a link to the preference center and someone ignores the double opt in then HS will allow me to mail them? That part specifically is where I think it's super vague and am looking for clarity on.

I see that you're a consultant, in your experience setting this up, if you have a footer cofigured with links to a subscription center and you turn on the HS out-of-the-box doulbe opt in, which as I understand it does it globally - so if I live in the USA I still am asked - and I ignore the double opt in mail, will HS block me from future marketing emails?

I read that excerpt and to me it makes me think that HS will allow me to continue to mail people - as in the system won't take preemptive measures and block them, like it does with unsubscrubes. Thus, I'm a little confused.
