We have segmented by location- US and CA.  We have also segmented by Sales team, Rep Agencies and Showroom associates.  This allows the content to be more specific to their needs.

So far, the only segmentation I've tried (since it was the only information available to the company I was working for) was based on email engagement. Initially, we sent our emails to literally all of our subscribers, which led us to an extremely low average of 20% in terms of open rates. After we segmented our emails to send to only those who have interacted with us in the past x number of months, our open rates went up to more or less 40 to 50 percent.

Marketing for a private, day/boarding school. We've segmented based on event and tour registration, allowing us to help drive to the next step. We've also segmented based on the time of year and their current grade, to find people that are looking for a quicker enrollment (mid-year).

Grace Nation Church segmenting an email campaign to reach married couples who have become empty nesters,  50 plus, with the idea of how function in their new normal. We discovered many people were having adjustment and transition issues. We developed workshops, travel clubs and support groups.
