What contact information is important for your business to capture?

A best practice for a successful segmentation strategy is collecting the right information. What this means is that you are collecting the right information that will help you create the segments for your emails. Keeping this in mind, what information does your business collect (or could it collect) to better segment its emails?

I perfectly believe that collecting best information is the best practice. When data are collected in a good way, it will help in determining how to create and send the emails

I believe both Explicit and Implicit data are important to gather for any business.

It allows a business to be strategic and purposeful with its contacts.

  • Explicit: is all the necessary contact information you need; for example, form submissions, surveys, and contact info.
  • Implicit: are just overall behavior gathering, Social media engagements, and website analytics.

Contact database and segmentation is the foundation of every email you send. The right information you could collect to better segments your contacts includes explicit data; data that is Intentionally shared by a prospects but this is just a surface gotten via form submission and survey responses.

Segmentation could better be collected via implicit data where your prospects and customers exhibits user behaviors as a result of human, helpful and value-driven engagement from your end to theirs. This helps you identify their product or service of interest and how to send the right information to avoid sending a spam email message.

Interests, frequency and types of emails each recipient wants to hear from us. We collect some of this already, but having the ability for each person to decide how often they want to hear from us would be a great addition and having sub-subscription types like interests would also be great. Creating segment-based preference centers would be helpful too.

As a school, I think DU does a pretty good job with their email marketing to students. However, I think the emails should be shortened because students tend to not read the whole email if its long.

Working for a nonprofit, the information we collect is no different than any other for profit business.  We need our clients' names and contact info to stay engaged and share relevant announcements.  It's the implicit data we struggle with because of the demographic we service that we do not capture behavior as well as we like, if at all, giving the nature of what we do and who are clients are.

We try to personally ask contacts if they currently have solutions for the products and services we provide through surveys etc. We collect data that is shared, like webinar registration and attendance, as well as, email engagement. We can collect data on website activity.  We, of course, also have customer data about what of our products and services they subscribe too. We mine for company data on their websites for size and specifications in their business that would be relevenat to some of our products. Company information, like industry, and contact titles, help us segment most of our emails.
