How would you go about conducting an email experiment?

Consider this: Your manager asks you to improve the click-through rate of your monthly newsletter. How would you go about conducting an experiment? What would you be looking to improve (and why)?

How would you go about conducting an email experiment?

Specific to my challenges with our newsletter, I'd set my first goal at increasing the open rate and I'd focus on fine-tuning the subject line. We are currently using a very direct and consistent naming invention that likely doesn't take advantage of the sexiness of our business, nor the value of the content that varies within the newsletter.

I would use A/B testing to understand my audience better and to analyze what is eye-catching and grabbing their attention most. Using A/B testing can determine how much interaction your emails are getting.

To improve the click-through rate of the monthly newsletter, I would be conducting a/b testing. Here, versions are shown to several groups of web users at the very same time in order to identify which version has the greatest influence and generates financial measures.

For click through rate

ill be looking to improve my email body copy

images used in my email, email body design, email CTA and email signature

why because these are what determines the high CTR

ill use AB testing on either segment (body copy or  CTA) per test

By using the A/B testing method, I can weigh the different elements in my copy over time and determine which one works better.

To improve the click-through rate I would do A/B testing on the CTA. I would create a newsletter with two different CTAs and evaluate which one performed better. I could also do A/B testing to evaulate the copy in the newsletter. I would be looking to improve the CTA or copy because I would assume that information in the newsletter didn't interest people to want to learn more or the CTA needs to be more obvious to the readers.

How would you go about conducting an email experiment?

I will go about the A/B testing

  • Why? I will be comparing the past result not a guess work to determine, and also know how and when to use the CTA. Not to also use the salesy words like free and discount

How would you go about conducting an email experiment?

  1. Create a Goal for the testing
    1. determine what I'm trying to achieve; opens, clicks, etc.
  2. Use a control email, and a Test email
  3. Ensure large enough sample size (1,000 min. total)
  4. Determine test window; 24 hrs or more
  5. Send test, analyze results and send "winning email" to the rest of your contacts

In conducting an experiment, I look to follow these steps:

1. Analyze past data to avoid guessing. Information like duration of campaign, interval of sending emails, and look to the email itself are relevant facts to consider. These pieces of information will be the base to plan the hypothesis.

2. Define the goal based on the information gathered and the testable elements for CTR like the Email body copy, design, images, and one of the most important the CTA.

3. Define the sample size by looking at the population and the desired confidence level and interval.

I would be looking to improve the CTR from the actual percentage to a realistic one. Let's say improve it from 1% to 3% in a half-year, always taking as a base the sample size along the A/B Test.

How would you go about conducting an email experiment?

1. Looking at the past results and doing some analysis
2. A/B testing: comparing the past results vs. a guesswork
3. Picking up what were missing in the past results

4. Planning, crafting email

5. Running A/B distribution test

6. Taking time and evaluating the results

7. Retest until getting desired goals

At onset I will carry out the A/B test to determine which of the email organisation/arrangement strategy influences the customer more
