Vimeo Embed Code only Working on iPhone Emails

SOLVE

Hi there,

I'm trying to send an email out with an embedded Vimeo email, and it only seems to appear correctly on iPhone - every other browser/email combination results in a blank space where the video should appear.

Vimeo Embed Code only Working on iPhone Emails

Hi @LizE ,

Video in email has extremely limited support; even more so if you're using an iframe embed. Here's an article from Email on Acid discussing the limited support and how to properly embed an HTML5 video with a fallback image link.

Vimeo Embed Code only Working on iPhone Emails

SOLVE

If you're experiencing issues with embedded Vimeo videos not displaying correctly in email clients or browsers other than iPhone, it's important to understand that embedding videos in emails can be problematic due to varying support for video playback and security concerns. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and improve the compatibility of your embedded Vimeo video:

  1. Check Email Client Support:

    • Ensure that the email client you're using supports embedded videos. While some email clients display embedded videos, others do not. It's important to understand which email clients your recipients are using.
  2. Use an Image or Thumbnail with a Play Button:

    • Instead of embedding the video directly into the email, create an image or thumbnail with a "Play" button overlay that links to the Vimeo video. When users click the thumbnail, it will open a new browser window or tab and play the video on Vimeo's website.
  3. Utilize GIFs:

    • Another approach is to use an animated GIF that provides a short preview or teaser of the video content. This can be more widely supported across email clients.
  4. HTML5 Video Player:

    • Consider using HTML5 video players within your email. However, this approach may not be supported by all email clients, so it's essential to test extensively.
  5. Responsive Design:

    • Ensure that the email template and video player are designed to be responsive, adapting to different screen sizes and email clients.
  6. Fallback Content:

    • Always provide fallback content or a text link to the video in case the embedded video doesn't work for some recipients. This ensures that everyone can access the video content in some form.
  7. Privacy and Security:

    • Be aware that some email clients and browsers may block or restrict embedded content for security and privacy reasons. Make sure your Vimeo video sharing settings allow for embedding, and consider adjusting your video's privacy settings if necessary.
  8. Test Across Multiple Email Clients and Browsers:

    • Use email testing tools or services to check how your email appears and functions across various email clients and web browsers. This can help you identify and address compatibility issues.
  9. Consider Using Video Platforms:

    • Instead of embedding the video directly into the email, you can use video platforms like Vimeo to host your video content. Share a link to the video within your email, and users can click to watch it on the platform's website. This approach is generally more widely supported.
