Personalization Token Not Working

We have created an default personalization token for First Name - "VIP". Unfortunately, the "First Name" personalization token now isn't working when we put into either the email preview or in the email body copy. It just says "Dear VIP" all the time now even when we know we have a first name property. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot would be helpful. Thank you.
