One thing I would say or clarify is, when you say you sent an automated email what does that mean?
Automated emails are normally created and then sent via workflows, is that true in your case? Or do you mean something else? Broadly speaking, if an automated email gets sent to contacts who should not have received the email, that is most likely down to wrong or incomplete enrolment criterias or lack of suppression lists.

Hey there, It's difficult to say for sure what happened with your email without seeing the actual set up but have you followed the exact instructutions in this article: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/marketing-email/how-do-i-create-an-email-suppression-list There is a chance that one setting overwrote another one which is why the email was sent out to the contacts you intended to exclude.
Did you automate it in a workflow or was it a scheduled email?
