How to avoid getting into spam or promotions

From one of the videos, the speaker said using generic words like 'free' and 'discounts' may increase the risk of having your email sent to spam. I realized all the promotional emails in which I opted-in that contain 'sales' actually get into my inbox while others that I did not subscribe to but have similar words go into spam or promotion. How does this work?

 

Also, what are the keywords to avoid in a subject title?

If you are talking about the Gmail categories - these are more automatic over time of Google learning. While some people view this as bad, being in promotions is not actually a bad thing because this has been a feature that has been out for awhile so by this point in time, there is definitely a learned set of expectations that a gmail user has when they go into that folder. It might be opens are not happening immediately, but emails are still being viewed.

 

Now if you are trying to make a marketing email that looks like it came from a rep, you should not be sending these through workflows or through the marketing email functions. They should be getting sent through the 1-to-1 function for Sales reps ( https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/email/send-and-reply-to-one-to-one-emails ).  As a marketing owner, you can help sales out by creating pre-made templates for them ( https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/conversations/use-templates ). However, if they come off as a marketing pitch, then it is possible for Google to still put your email into the Promotions category. To try to avoid this, make sure to personalize the email as much as possible and make it more of a contuation piece of a conversation as opposed to a pitch.

As far as keywords go they tend to penalize clickbaity words and formatting.

 

Avoid ALL CAPS, red text, bold and excessive punctuation!!! As well as buzz words/phrases like "Congratulations you've won!" or "Redeem your free gift now!"

@Nike While spammy words used to be a major trigger for google / msft / yahoo (it still is for yahoo), most now rely on your overall domain reputation to determine where your email lands (inbox, promotions, clutter or the spam folder).  Email "deliverability" (not the same as "delivery" - the number HubSpot reports on - i.e. did the recieving server accept the email) is getting harder and harder.  There are a number of steps you can take to ensure the highest probable outcome of getting your email delivered, such as setting up DKIM in HubSpot, which more or less states to the email service providers that this is your mail and you take responsibility for it and suppressing people that aren't engaging with your email (this is a huge factor).  Not self-serving, but this post might help understand it a bit more.  https://www.theseventhsense.com/blog/email-domain-reputation-are-your-emails-going-directly-to-spam  Happy to keep the discussion going.

We also have the problem that our emails send through the Marketing Free Email end up in spam on Gmail accounts. I tried to follow the steps to set up DKIM (https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/cos-general/how-to-connect-your-email-sending-dom...), but I don't have the option "Domains & URLs" in the settings. Do you have any suggestions what we can try?

Unfortunately, I don't think custom sending domains is available for HubSpot Free.  You should confirm with support, but I didn't see it on the list of supported subscriptions at this link:  https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/cos-general/how-to-connect-your-email-sending-dom...  I also couldn't find anything on support channels that states that it is.  There is another chain on this subject at this link:  https://community.hubspot.com/t5/HubSpot-Ideas/URGENT-enable-DKIM-authentication-for-HubSpot-Starter...
