SEO value of Event Page: Evergreen or Unique each year?

SOLVE

I have an SEO question pertaining to event calendars.

I did a roll-up event calendar for an industry last year, 100 events covered. It received good traffic in it's niche. It had "2020 (niche) calendar" in the url, title, etc.

I'm doing a new one this year. I see two options, wondering which is best for long term SEO / rank/traffic/authority value:

1) Don't put 2021 in the new events page. Make the page evergreen. Then next year, just replace the content with the new year's events. All backlinks then work forever.

2) Make this year's page a 2021 events page, with 2021 in the url as well. Next year, put a redirect on the page to point to a new 2022 event calendar page, created separately.

I'd certainly be in favour one #1.  Any time you have to do a redirect you dilute the passing link value.

You can fully optimise the page for the year by putting it in the title tag and content, then update next year. The only bit it would exclude you doing is the URL which isn't a massive loss.

Agree with Ricky - you can go one step further by collating the content (videos, presos, etc) from this years event and creating an archive page on the domain for each event which, over time, builds up to a library of useful "attract" content.
