Why we moved from WordPress Templates to Custom Core PHP for better SEO (My Experience)

Hi Community,

I wanted to start a discussion about Site Speed vs. CMS Convenience.

As a developer, I’ve seen many businesses stick to heavy WordPress templates because they are easy to set up. However, as traffic grows, "Plugin Bloat" starts killing the Core Web Vitals (LCP and CLS scores), which directly impacts Google Rankings.

At my agency, Do Digitals, we recently experimented by migrating a client from a heavy page-builder theme to a Custom Core PHP architecture.

Here is what we found:

Speed: The mobile load time dropped from 4.5s to 1.2s.

Security: Without 30+ plugins, the attack surface was minimized.

Flexibility: We could implement custom schemas (like JSON-LD) without relying on third-party tools.

I know HubSpot CMS is also great for speed compared to traditional WP setups.

My Question to fellow devs & marketers: At what stage do you recommend clients switch from a template-based site to a custom-coded solution? Is it based on traffic volume or just the need for specific functionality?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Best, Ram Kishor Founder, Do Digitals

I usually recommend moving from a template-based site to a custom-coded solution when plugin bloat starts affecting site speed, Core Web Vitals, or when you need advanced functionality that templates/plugins cannot handle efficiently. Traffic volume is a factor, but performance and flexibility often matter more for SEO and user experience.
