What advice would you give to someone trying to segment by contact list membership?

When creating smart content, you can segment a list of contacts and provide them with content that’s different from what the average visitor sees. This means that any time a contact on that list visits your website, they’ll see content that’s specifically tailored to them. What recommendation would you give to someone looking to use smart content by contact list membership? For example, what are the benefits, how would you go about implementation, etc.

The type of sourcing and systems being used matter a lot.

If looking at it from this perspective, we could start by knowing all about the capabilities of your data management system and what other systems it is connected to.

Consider whether your system can track each contact’s information source or tell you where the information came from (such as IP address, in-store, online, whether the person signed themselves up or someone else signed them up for them, or if the person meant to sign up or clicked by accident, what products they bought before they signed up, what state of mind they were in (which you might be able to infer from search history or website navigation patterns, address type (PO box, single-family home, card type, bank type, currency type, business, apartment - in other words,  the circumstances under which they signed up, and any primary, demographic, behavioral,  data that can help form a profile.

That way, you can create unique experiences with foresight that are not limiting or restrictive, making the customer journey more educational and enjoyable.  I believe that when we apply contextual information to the customer profile by considering the source, it means a more empowering experience for the customer, where their overall past, present, and future needs and gut instincts are better understood. This is also better for the company because the customer will be more engaged and contribute more to reviews, social media sharing, and more.

Based on the video teachings, a good way to segment by contact list membership is to perhaps segment people that have purchased something on your website once versus a person that has yet to buy something from your website. Through Hubspot or other third-party e-commerce platforms, you can track your audience based on buyer history, etc.

From there, you can send coupon codes to people that haven't purchased something from you before to tip them over the edge whereas you would turn off coupon codes for people who have purchased something, but you might present them with an exclusive "VIP" only offer for exclusive content, another coupon code (that's a different amount, same amount, etc.) to showcase to each of your customers that you are segmenting by who they are and what they do.

I like this. I used to think this made sense, but I realized people are becoming more multifaceted. Would you also consider developing multiple buyer personas as you segment your audience? Or simply housing individual profiles in a system, not restricting users to specific groups.

This approach would allow a product owner or marketer to be flexible and responsive to insights (because we gain new insights every minute) based on interactions and behaviors. Your method works, but with the proper strategic planning and software, you could do more with less guesswork.

You can segment your users list based on types of customer you have that differentiate based on the buying journey from customer awareness or potential buyers to actual buyers and lastly to loyal customers which can do repeat sales. Also create a marketing funnel to guide you to identify your customers to qualify from marketing leads to sales leads. This will help you communicate your type of customers by their segments, or cohorts to contextualize your marketing campaigns and achieve common goals each user segments.

Segment the list by how hot or cold the lead is (in what stage of the buyer journey they are). This way, the content we send them will be more relevant and will lead them to change stages faster, without scaring them or boring them.

To use smart content effectively by segmenting your contact list, start by grouping your contacts based on common traits, like purchase history or interests. This allows you to show personalized content to each group when they visit your website, making their experience more relevant and engaging. Use marketing tools to automatically display the right content to the right people. Regularly check how well your segments are performing and adjust as needed to keep the content fresh and effective. The main benefits are higher engagement, better customer satisfaction, and increased loyalty, as people see content that matches their interests.

You can nest list memberships. For example a new list called "ready for sales reach out" that is created by "is a member of list" Target Accounts AND "is a member of list" Viewed Pricing Page.

What advice would you give to someone trying to segment by contact list membership?

Absolutely, personalizing communication is essential to effectively target specific messages to users or customers. Here's how it can be implemented, whether on a website or via emails:

1. **User Segmentation**: By analyzing user data such as their website behavior, preferences, purchase history, or location, you can segment your audience into specific groups. For example, you might have segments based on interests, engagement level, or purchase cycle.

2. **Dynamic Content on the Website**: Using personalization technologies, you can display dynamic content on your website based on user characteristics and actions. For example, you could show product recommendations based on the user's past purchases or blog articles related to their declared interests.

3. **Personalized Emails**: When sending emails, use user data to personalize the content and make messages more relevant. This could include product recommendations, special offers based on purchase preferences, or birthday or loyalty messages.

4. **Communication Automation**: Use marketing automation tools to trigger personalized communications based on user behavior. For example, sending a follow-up email after a user has viewed a specific product on your website but hasn't made a purchase yet.

5. **Feedback and Results Analysis**: Regularly collect user feedback and analyze the performance of your personalized communications. This will allow you to adjust your communication strategies based on user preferences and needs, thereby improving the effectiveness of your campaigns.

By personalizing communication in this way, you can enhance user engagement, improve customer satisfaction, and increase conversion rates on your website or through your email marketing.
