Regardless of the story you’re trying to tell and how you’re trying to tell it, storytelling has three essential elements:

  • Characters
  • Conflict
  • Resolution

Choose one of your favorite brands, and tell their business's story by answering the below questions.

  • Who is the brand?
  • Who is their audience?
  • What challenge are they helping their audience to overcome? How are they doing it?

*To learn more about this, check out The Power of Storytelling lesson via HubSpot Academy.

Canva is a brand helping users to brand and market themselves and their businesses using clean and ready-to-use designs. It provides a vast array of visually pleasant templates that can be easily tweaked by users to meet their needs. It caters to the design needs of anyone and everyone. It was founded by Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht

Their target audience include small business owners, independent content creators, marketing teams, corporate professionals, and non designers in general.

They have developed a solution that unites designers or non-designers, corporate employers or travel bloggers, and small social media managers or marketing firms. In their words, "they have templates for absolutely anything."

They are solving these problems by making everyone feel like a designer. That is in fact the origin story of Canva. Melanie was a design lecturer in a university when she realised how long it took students to understand complex apps and design anything. Together with her co-founder, they thought of a way to simplify design to enable people catch on more quickly. However, due to lack of funding, they decided to launch a niche product company first—Fusion Yearbooks.

Their choice of niche was inspired by Melanie's mom. When Melanie noticed how much time and effort her mom, a teacher, spent on yearbooks, she and her co-founder, Cliff, focused on building a software that made the process simpler and faster. Fusion Yearbooks grew with time, gained traction and funding to expand into various areas of needs and, today, we have Canva.

Canva has an interesting selling point. They handle marketing by using their design templates. Personally, this strategy has me sold. This shows confidence in their solution which prompts others to give them a try. Canva is known for sharing guides and hacks that users never knew existed through social media. Once in a while, they initiate design challenges around various themes and encourage users to post their attempts.

Tesla is helping people by providing high-class cars and energy solutions that use clean energy to reduce air pollution and global warming.

How are they doing it?

Tesla uses a clean energy concept for all products and services such as cars, energy solutions, power walls, powerpack, and a solar roof that allows customers to manage renewable energy to save cost and help reduce world global warming.

Most importantly, Tesla uses 2 strategies to promote its brand.

2. Personal Branding Elon Musk himself usually gives speeches and attends events representing Tesla on media which made people remember him and Tesla impactfully

Who is the brand?

All-around consign limited is a Nigerian owned private import-export business and the sole distributor of CONA solar dryers in West Africa.

Who is their audience?

Farmers, Agribusiness owners and other stakeholders in the Ginger value chain.

What challenge are they helping the audience overcome and how do they go about it?

Nigeria is the 3rd largest producer of ginger in the world (after India and china) but gets only13% of global export market share. This is as a result of the difficulties the sector faces such as high post harvest losses, low yields, lack of tech and infrastructure, know how on improved processing and product quality, poor organisation, lack of an enabling institutional environment, fluctuating prices amongst others. All-Around consign supports smallholder farmers with inputs and trainings on globally acceptable agronomic standards to ensure that they get maximum yields and guaranteed income increase

Eliminating post harvest losses occuring due to degradation of quality and quantity by following an automated 24 hours dry processing model using

the SOLAR powered CONA dryers. This model mitigates post harvest wastage while improving product quality. With CONA Solar dryers, all the harvests of every farming season can be processed and preserved for future use.

Content Hacker is founded by Julia McCoy after she sold a successful content marketing agency. She targets businesses and entrepreneurs who are trying to create an effective communication channel to connect with their audience and sell their products and services.

Many entrepreneurs and business owners experience difficulty in expressing themselves. They are smart, equipped, and knowledgeable about their products, but they lack the strategies that could boost their marketing outreaches. Content Hacker/Julia McCoy reaches out to them, creates an emotional appeal and brings them to bed with her. In one of her emails, she talked about an accident involving a dog, her daughter, and a swimming pool.

Her daughter was attacked.

She mentioned that they rushed her to the hospital and everyone was unsettled. Her FB paged went on fire. But she shared a picture of her daughter lying in her couch while she writes at the other end of the couch in the same email. She told readers her daughter is back home and recuperating fast.

She used the story to grab attention, I suppose, and relate the human experience. And it's also her way of saying "just like any other person, this happens to me too. And because this happens to me, you'd expect what happens to you have happened to me. This is how I grew my content team in my previous business (with a link). This is how I got X3,00000 ROI on the business (with link), and you can even book a session with me (insert link) to train your content team".

I find her intriguing and I look forward to learning from her.

Who is the brand?
Amazon

Who is their audience?

Consumers with home computers or smart devices who prefer shopping online for convenience, fast delivery, and competitive prices.

What challenges are they helping their audience to overcome? How are they doing it?

Amazon acts as a one stop shop. Consumers know they can see almost every possible purchase option in one place, and they can narrow down the list of choices by scrolling through the product reviews. Additionally, Amazon has created a convenient and efficient shopping experience by developing a deep understanding of how the customers find them, and why they choose them, so they can focus their resources on the areas that will have the greatest impact. This means making merchandising changes, offering customers an incentive for more product reviews, improving the mobile experience, offering free shipping, investing in new 3rd party data sources, or trying new ad types. In everything they do they put the customer’s interest first.

Who is the brand?
NUTRI-MUM

Who is their audience?
Women trying to conceive, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers

What challenges are they helping their audience to overcome? How are they doing it?

When I started my TTC journey, I knew it wasn't going to be easy because my cycle was irregular. Dealing with irregular cycles while trying to get pregnant can be really frustrating trust me especially when the mood swings set in all due to hormonal imbalace which alot of women are also going through. My Ob/Gyn recommended some medications one of which was Nutri-Mum. Since I've been taking Nutri-Mum my period has been regular. It helped balance my hormones and uplift my mood. It supports fertility and can be used for all stages of pregnancy; from Preconception to pregnancy to breastfeeding.
