Storytelling framework in action

Regardless of the story you’re trying to tell and how you’re trying to tell it, storytelling has three essential elements:

  • Characters
  • Conflict
  • Resolution

Choose one of your favorite brands, and tell their business's story by answering the below questions.

  • Who is the brand?
  • Who is their audience?
  • What challenge are they helping their audience to overcome? How are they doing it?

Brand: Dunkin's (Dunkin Donuts, but I believe they officially changed it to just Dunkin's)
Audience: Their audience is a pretty large mix of people. It consists of commuters, older teenagers, families, and busy people who don't have time to make coffee for themselves at every point of the day they need one.
Audience challenge/overcoming it:
Customers are busy, tired and always on-the-go. They want a straightforward, reliable and convenient place to get the energy they need for the day without having to sacrifice taste or preference. Dunkin's aims to have fast service, to provide the same experience for customers at every store, and offer a nice rewards card. You can order online, go to the driv-thru, get delivery or go right inside. Comparatively speaking, Dunkin's is generally lower priced than other popular coffeeshops like Starbucks (although they creep up) They also do their best to stay in touch with the community. For example, offering free coffee or donut days for various occasions or for people in specific industries, really reinforcing the idea that they are your friendly neighborhood coffeeshop who you can trust and rely on.

One of my favorite brands is Spanx. The audience is women- but more specifically, strong female leaders and entrepreneurs who can relate to Sara Blakely. While the obvious challenge is being able to wear pants without underwear, the underlying challenge is helping women find their confidence.

- The Brand IKEA

- Their audience want to target very wide, there are adults, young generation, millennials even businesses. They are the people who are in need of buying furniture for their home.

- They challenge their customers with furniture assembly games, most of which do not come pre-assembled. IKEA does this to make customers have feelings for each product that it creates. If you just buy a pre-installed product, you won't be able to cherish it as much as you make it. To be able to give their customers a story that makes them buy products, IKEA has built a video storytelling strategy about each person's personal life activities when they don't have good furniture and when they don't have good furniture or a video of how you feel when you install IKEA products.

Brand: Mainstay

Audience: Young professional women in their 20s to 30s

Challenge: Office shoes can be quite expensive and most manufacturers do not bother too much about the source of the materials. So Mainstay helps its audience overcome this by selling shoes that are reasonably priced, but still of quality and locally handcrafted.
