Hello everyone! I am a fresher and recently joined the marketing community. I recently started as a content writer for a sustainable backpack and home essential brand. And my manager is chewing me out for not knowing the basics and asking me to learn everything myself. Can you guys help me by giving some suggestions and advice on what I should do? I can write, but I'm struggling with how to research competitors, understand Google, and how to plan and design the content, like I am struggling with even deciding on pillar content. Really appreciate some help. Thanks a lot!
Hi Content writing has changed a lot. To learn the basics, I would suggest that you search on Hubspot. They do have some training and basics on content writing. I don't think I am allowed to post links here, but I could recommend a few programs that can help you learn what you need to know. Sylvia
Hey @Hv5 ! So sorry to hear your manager's throwing you in the deep end like that – it's definitely not the most fun way to learn! But don't worry, we've all been newbies at some point, and this community is super helpful.
For getting the hang of things:
Spy on the Competition: Think of it like checking out what the cool kids are doing! Google your brand's main keywords and see who pops up. Stalk their websites and social media – what kind of stuff are they putting out? What seems to be working for them?
Befriend Google (SEO): Google has its own little "how-to" guides for beginners (search "Google SEO starter guide"). Also, try to figure out what people are actually searching for (keyword research – there are free tools!). Then, make sure your awesome writing includes those words in the right places on the page.
Plan Your Content Like a Superhero: Think of big, important topics that your backpack and home stuff falls under (like "What Makes a Backpack Sustainable?"). That's your "pillar." Then, you can write smaller posts that zoom in on specific parts of that big topic. A simple calendar helps you keep track of what you're gonna write and when.
Seriously, don't stress too much! Ask us anything – even if it feels basic. We're happy to help you figure things out. What's the first thing you're trying to wrap your head around? 😊
Thank you, @DianaGomez .. I'm a newbie too an absolutely appreciate your comment.
I'd like to ask. Are there specific learning areas to prioritize to enable me do well in an intership role. I haven't bagged one yet because I wanted to learn the basics first so I dont get burnt before even starting out. Also, how do I improve my writing, please? I only write about my personal experiences at the moment (for fun since I was little) and would like to explore beyond that to understand brandable writings.
Hello @DianaGomez , thank you very much for the guidance and advice. Really appreciate it. You have helped me big time. Will post again if I have any queries in the future.
