Hello, I'm new here👋I need help on how to get started as a B2B Saas content writer. What are the necessary steps to take? What are the things to tell a client to get started with work? Who are your target audience? What best platform can your build a personal brand ?
Hi @oRuth66 and welcome to the Community! You're already doing something right now that many don't - asking for real-world advice from practitioners. So, kudos.
Here's a list I found from various sources in my own research and experience.
Practice writing regularly Make writing a daily habit. Set aside time each day to write ad copy, social media posts, blog articles, or other marketing content. The more you write, the better you'll become.
Study successful copywriting examples This is where resources like from above can help. Analyze effective ad copies, social media posts, and marketing campaigns (or ones that you find intriguing). Take note of their structure, tone, and persuasive techniques. This will help you understand what makes compelling copy.
Master headline creation Headlines are crucial in grabbing attention, especially for social media marketing. Practice crafting catchy, concise headlines that entice readers to engage with your content.
Develop user experience (UX) awareness This one is huge right now. Understand how users interact with different platforms and devices. This knowledge will help you create copy that's easy to read and engage with across various channels.
Hone your editing skills I need to take this advice - I hate editing LOL. But, as writers we need to learn to edit our work ruthlessly. Cut unnecessary words, simplify complex sentences, and ensure your message is clear and concise.
Use simple language Avoid jargon and complex terms. Write in a conversational tone that's easy for your target audience to understand.
Learn SEO basics This will help with our digital and ever-changing world of marketing. Understanding search engine optimization will help you create content that's more likely to be found by your target audience.
Seek feedback and iterate Share your work with peers, professors, or mentors. Be open to constructive criticism and use it to improve your writing.
Stay updated on industry trends Fortunately, you're already doing this as part of the HubSpot Community. Keep up with marketing blogs, webinars, and industry events to stay current with the latest copywriting and content marketing trends.
Build a portfolio You're probably already doing this in school, but make sure to create a collection of your best work to showcase your skills to potential employers or clients.
By consistently applying these strategies, you'll develop stronger copywriting skills that will serve you well in your marketing career, particularly in areas like social media marketing and ad copywriting.
I also think continung to learn is important. Here are a few of my favorite resources I like to share with writers wanting to improve:
I'd also check out Douglas Burdett's The Marketing Book Podcastwhere he interviews authors every week. It's like getting Cliffs Notes each week of great books!

@oRuth66 becoming a B2B SaaS content writer can be a rewarding journey. Dan has covered a lot of essential steps, and I'm excited to hear more about your journey!
getting started as a B2B SaaS content writer involves several steps. First, it's absolutely necessary to understand the industry, i.e. its common trends, pain points, and terminologies. I'd recommend studying different B2B models and how SaaS companies operate.
Secondly, create sample content such as blog posts, case studies, whitepapers, and eBooks. Highlight your understanding of B2B SaaS and how you can use it to drive growth and provide solutions to the pain points you figured out. Your writing should be clear, concise, and engaging. Practice writing for different stages of the buyer's journey: awareness, consideration, and decision, see here for more information: What Is the Buyer's Journey?
Thirdly, to stay updated and connect with potential clients, I'd recommend to join LinkedIn groups, online forums, and communities related to SaaS and content marketing. Also, attendwebinars and industry conferences to network and market yourself.
When talking to a client, you want to convey your understanding of their needsand how you can help. Here are key points to cover:
Demonstrate your knowledge of their industry and business model.
Highlight how your content can address their specific pain points and goals.
Explain your approach to creating a content strategy that aligns with their business objectives.
Discuss how you plan to optimize content for lead generation and nurturing (e.g. with the help of HubSpot tools).
Share your portfolio and specific examples of successful content pieces.
Provide case studies or testimonials if available.
Outline your workflow, including how you gather information, create content, and manage revisions.
Emphasize your commitment to clear and consistent communication.
I'd say your target audience in the B2B SaaS space typically includes decision-makers (CEOs, CTOs, and other C-suite executives, directors and managers in relevant departments (e.g., IT, marketing, sales)), influencers (i.e. mid-level managers who influence purchasing decisions, and technical staff who will use the software) as well as potential users (e.g. employees who will interact with the SaaS product daily).
In my opinion the best platforms to build a personal brand are the following:
LinkedIn: Perfect for highlighting your expertise in B2B SaaS content writing and sharing valuable content, engaging with industry leaders, and participating in relevant groups.
your personal blog/website: Perfect for showcasing your portfolio, services, and testimonials and publishing blog posts related to SaaS and content marketing.
Medium: Perfect for reaching a wider audience and establish yourself as a thought leader.
Twitter: Perfect for sharing insights, engaging with industry conversations, and connecting with potential clients.
Quora: Perfect for demonstrating your expertise by answering questions related to SaaS and content marketing
Let me know if you have questions.
Best regards
Adriane
