Thanks for posting, I know we have a support ticket open but i wanted to post here for transparency where other users might be seeing the same issue.

So you are indeed correct! As we go through here:

This should look like the attached screenshot where when you are composing an e-mail in G-mail you see write an email for me text appear (See screenshot)

The issue we might be seeing here is that currently you only have one portal ungated for the BETA so we want to make sure that its that portal you have selected to sync your G-mail extension with as we go through here:
https://knowledge.hubspot.com/connected-email/manage-your-hubspot-sales-extension-settings

As if any other extension is selected it won't pull through 😞
