Unable to add a one-time discount in the CPQ tool

Hi all,

I am a new HubSpot user and am trying to add a one-time special discount to a quote. I am unable to do this in the new CPQ quoting tool although this capability is available in the Legacy quoting tool. Our products have tiered pricing; so I was old to upgrade to Commerce Professional to get access to this (beta!) feature. The AI Assistant and online chat all point me back to the Legacy Quoting tool, which we can't use due to the tiered pricing (and moreover, would require my admin to revoke my Commerce Pro Seat.

How do I add a one-time special discount that is not tied to any products for a customer with the new CPQ quoting tool?

Btw, if any HubSpot product manager is watching this board, you folks have regressed with the CPQ quoting tool compared to the Legacy Quoting tool!

Unable to add a one-time discount in the CPQ tool

Greetings @a14l

In the new HubSpot CPQ quoting tool (part of Commerce Hub Professional or Enterprise), the ability to add discounts works differently from the Legacy quoting tool:

  • You can add discounts at the line item/product level using the line item editor while building a quote, including with tiered pricing products. Each product or service you add to the quote can have its own discount set directly
  • There is currently no documented support for adding a one-time “order-level” discount that is not tied to any specific product in the new CPQ quoting tool. This means that if you want to apply a global, non-product-specific discount, you must allocate the discount across line items individually
  • Order/quote-level discounts are only available on Invoices, Payment Links, and Legacy Quotes, but not in the new CPQ quoting tool as a single field for the whole quote/order
  • In the Legacy quoting tool, there was a field to add one-time, overall discounts directly to the quote, but this field/feature is not yet present in the new CPQ tool.

So additional workarounds and next steps could possibly be:

  • Manually distribute the discount among all line items in the quote to simulate an order-level discount.
  • Monitor HubSpot’s updates to the CPQ tool, as broad order-level discount features may be released in the future (given user feedback and the tool still being in beta).
  • If your use case absolutely requires a global discount, using invoices or payment links may be an alternative, but these do not tie into all the advanced CPQ/quote features.

So at this time, the new CPQ quoting tool does not allow a one-time, quote-level discount not tied to a product. Discounts must be applied at the line item level. This is a known gap versus the Legacy quoting tool, and your situation aligns with the current documentation.

Hope this helps, if it does then help the community by marking it as a solution.

Happy HubSpotting.

Thanks & Regards,

Thank you for your detailed response @DilshadShaikh. Unfortunately, the workaround of manually distributing the discount among all line items in the quote wont work for us as we want to keep a clear separation between one-time "promotional" discounts and regular discounts. I sincerely hope HubSpot fixes this.

You can submit this as idea in ideas panel, if you want this to have it as feature. If the idea gets upvotes, hubspot's technical team would think to add.
