Hi all. I’m working with quotes in HubSpot and want to add some extra functionality: specifically, I’d like users to be able to input text, submit it, and have that text appear directly on the quote.
Is this possible within HubSpot? From what I’ve gathered, I may need to build everything as a custom solution. I’ve also heard that you can’t mix custom code with the drag-and-drop editor — is that correct, or am I misunderstanding?
I’m also a bit confused about how child themes fit in. I assumed they would let me add custom HTML, CSS, and JS on top of the parent theme, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Could someone clarify whether what I’m trying to do is achievable, and how child themes are actually meant to work in this context?
Under the legacy quote experience: you can either (1) have your reps fill out specific properties that get pulled into the quote via your custom quote template or (2) create a new quote creation experience by leveraging custom CRM cards
Under the new AI-Powered quote experience: users should be able to input text and have that be reflected on the final quote - I haven't played around too much with this yet but a Commerce Hub trial should help you assess the funcationality if needed. The new experience leverages a drag and drop set up for the templates but is limited because you can't have your own custom quote templates if that makes sense.
Child themes won't apply for the new experience but you should be able to create child themes for the quote themes that correspond with the legacy quoting experience. I generally prefer to clone the entire theme on my end when building out a custom quote template in this manner.
Hope this answers your questions but let me know if there's anything that's unclear!

They'll only be able to appear on object records (ie. deal/contact/company). So rather than utilising the standard quote creation flow the idea is to have it displayed in the middle of the record cards so that it is the preferred method of choice! To my knowledge the quote creation flow is rather gated but it's possible with the new AI-Powered CPQ experience further customisation could be allowed down the line (fingers crossed)
That's correct yes. Short of 'overriding' the quote creation flow through the app card method, there's no other way to allow the filling of a property in the standard quote creation modal/flow. The only two 'quote properties' HubSpot exposes for manual entry are the terms and the comments.
Nice to meet you! We have an app for HubSpot called Portant. It will give you more control over the data included in your documents (including using any Custom Property or performing custom calculations on the properties).
We use Google Docs or Slides to allow you to design the Quote to look exactly the way you want it to. I’m linking a short 60s video about it here:
For example, Portant can:
source and use any data connected to your HubSpot Deal and customise a quote with it (custom properties and objects included).
save document details and links as custom properties on your deal so you can automate workflows from data that Portant creates.
be used as an action within a HubSpot workflow (or run from the Portant App Card on the record).
generate PDFs, attach them to objects, and include eSignature steps if needed.
We have some docs to help you get started: https://docs.portant.co/portant-docs/sources/hubspot but if you need any additional help, or just want to see how deep the integration goes please feel free to email me tom@portant.co and we can set up a call.

No worries, happens in a big system! I have a good knowledge of React so I have got it setup myself but the app cards dont seem to appear anywhere within the quotes menu? Will they appear on the themes or templates?

I tried the app card solution, but it didn’t quite work the way I was hoping. I also experimented with the first approach having reps fill out specific properties that get pulled into the quote via a custom quote template but even that doesn’t fully meet my needs. Ideally, I’d like a property that can be filled in during the quote creation flow and then displayed on the quote itself. From what I can see, though, this isn’t really feasible beyond HubSpot’s predefined properties, since it seems custom properties can’t be created directly on a quote. Does that sound about right?
