The Commerce Hub team has been hard at work improving our billing functionality so that you can get paid by your buyers however you/they would like. Until today subscriptions and payments were very much connected - in order to create a subscription, the first payment within that subscription needed to be collected or scheduled. You now have more flexibility than ever with the ability to automatically charge a given payment method OR automatically create and distribute invoices to be paid at the pre-determined cadence for the pre-determined amount.
A few other pro tips:
You can still schedule subscriptions with recurring invoices
You can convert deals into subscriptions
You can use subscription based workflows with a subscription status of "unpaid" to run automation around (you guessed it) unpaid subscriptions
You can use invoice-based workflows to follow up on overdue invoices, check this out for more guidance!
