Workaround so deals always have an associated company or contact?

Has anyone here come up with a good workaround to enforce it so that deals always have an associated company or contact? We've set up a workflow to notify us when this is not the case but its still feels more manual than needed. We've also had quite a few deals close historically not associated to any company which makes company spend reconciliation a pain.

Had this question come up at least a couple times in July alone. Seems like a strong need exists to OPTIONALLY force contact or company association at deal creation time -- i.e., currently no workaround.
