What happens to data when 1st funnel stage is deleted?

Hi, we are using the free CRM version and if we want to delete the 1st stage of our current funnel and let the 2nd stage be our funnel's first stage going forward, what happens to the "Deals" that are now sittting in the 1st stage? And, what happens to the data of the "deals" that have gone from this 1st stage to other stages in the past?

(Essetnially, we don't want to lose any of this data. We to retain the data and just track how contacts move from our current stage 1 to current stage 2 using the customer lifecylce tracking instead of the funnel tracking, because our current 1t stage is not where we think the funnel should start).
