Turning contacts from Marketing to No marketing contacts constantly

SOLVE

Hello

We have a list of thousands of subscribers that we will move from our old CRM to Hubspot.

Our limit for marketing contacts on Hubspot is only 200k, so for us not to go over it, my boss suggested constantly turning contacts from marketing to no marketing.

Example

We'll send an email to list 1

We turn them to marketing contacts

Campaign is over

We turn them to no-marketing contacts

What are the negatives/limitations of this kind of behavior?

Thanks

Turning contacts from Marketing to No marketing contacts constantly

SOLVE

Hi @EQuintero2,

If a contact was previously set as marketing in a given month, you can update their status to non-marketing at any time, but it won’t take effect until after the next update date, see here: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/contacts/set-contacts-as-non-marketing

Typically this means that a contact will stay a marketing contact until the end of the month and will only be marked as non-marketing on the first day of the next month.

In other words, if you're sending at least one email per month to your customer, your method wouldn't work. It would only work if there are entire months where you're not planning to email these contacts.

Besides your method potentially not working (because of the built-in delay), keep in mind that you might have workflows running that are relying on the marketing contact status, e.g. workflows that deliver follow-pu emails or nurturing.

Lastly, ad audiences in HubSpot also rely on the marketing contact status: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/create-ads-audiences-in-hubspot

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!
