Show the status of pending non-marketing contacts so that they can be identified separately. Currently, they remain as 'Marketing contacts' until they are moved. It would be really helpful if there was another status so we could manage our contacts more efficiently.

Also, rather than allow you to go over your marketing contacts limit. It would be great if it didn't allow you to go over it, like not allowing you to spend money if you don't have sufficient funds in your bank account. A message could pop up to show you the cost of new tiers and how many credits you still have. It's a real negative to the experience of working at the upper end of the limit as the penalty of moving to another tier is very costly, especially for a small business.

The accounting for Marketing Contacts is also very unclear. The billing page reads accurately, however when you are actively moving contacts - the figure in the pop up of available contacts reads much higher - making it easy for HubSpot customers go over their limits.

Hi @Quinine

Please check this article for all available marketig contact properties.

The property "Marketing contact until next update": indicates if a contact will be considered a marketing or non-marketing contact upon the next update date.

  • When it is Yes, the contact is currently a marketing contact, but will be set as a non-marketing contact on the next update date.
  • When it is left blank, the contact’s current status will remain the same after the update date.

I recommend either creating a list, additional filter in your reports, or a separate report to quickly see which contacts are scheduled to become non-marketing contacts.

As for the billing implications - I recommend limiting who can even set this status, as it is the easiest way of keeping on top of it.

I am also not really following what you are trying to express here "The accounting for Marketing Contacts is also very unclear. The billing page reads accurately, however when you are actively moving contacts - the figure in the pop up of available contacts reads much higher - making it easy for HubSpot customers go over their limits." can you provide an actual example and maybe include a screenshot or two.

Cheers

Totally hear you! Running into surprise contact charges can be brutal, especially when budgets are tight. Just to double-check, are you already tagging non-marketing contacts with a custom property or list to track their status before making the switch?

One quick win: create an active list that flags contacts with Marketing contact status = Non-marketing and pair that with a custom checkbox like “Pending switch.” I once set up a workflow that flipped that box after a form submission, which made it way easier to keep tabs before pushing anyone into the paid tier, or reverse this if you want them to start in marketing contacts and get removed if no activity for like 6 months.

For the tier overage thing—100% agree, it’d be so much better if HubSpot had a hard cap or at least a warning before the damage is done. Let me know if you want help setting up a notification or a cap workaround using workflows or reports. While it has your focus, setting up some reengagement campaigns to clean house of old contacts can also significantly reduce costs for some orgs
