Prevent lead progress to next stage unless company field is filled

Hi


I'm trying to enforce a validation rule where sales users cannot change the Lead Status from 'Potential' to 'Interested' unless the associated Company VAT Number is filled in.


This is critical for us to ensure proper data quality and avoid duplicates. Ideally, I'd like users to see an error or be blocked from making this update—similar to validation rules in Salesforce.

 

Is there any native way to enforce this in HubSpot, or a workaround that simulates hard validation?

This is unfortunately not possible at this stage. However, other users have requested this before, in this case for deals: https://community.hubspot.com/t5/HubSpot-Ideas/Make-properties-on-associated-records-required-when-m...

As far as workarounds go, here's what you could do:

  • Create a lead property, make lead property required, use workflow to copy lead property from lead to company (downside: the field might already have a value on the company, meaning that a user might have to unnecessarily input it on the lead)
  • [Enterprise only] create lead property, single checkbox, set to view only, make it a required stage property and set it only to checked (via workflow) when the VAT is maintained on the company record
  • Use a workflow to send an email notification if VAT is still missing after the lead has progressed beyond that stage
