Every time my BDR team emails a contact at a new company, they become owner of the company by default. After a few weeks, they are owners of hundreds of companies that is impossible to manage.
We would prefer to be owners only over companies that we have active relationships with, not just every single company we have ever emailed. Can we please get an option in settings to keep companies unassigned until manually set, or something similar?

As far as workarounds go, one option would be assigning a default user, as explained here. Alternatively, if you simply do not want BDRs to own contacts / companies, you could create a workflow which enrolls records by those users and clears the owner property. (I'd agree that a native setting, as linked above, would be a better option, of course.)
You can make it easier for other HubSpot users to find this post, the request and the workaround by accepting my reply as a solution. I'd appreciate it!

I appreciate you pointing out the other thread. I had searched for it but came up empty. I commented there, but as the topic was opened in 2018 and there are many other users requesting updates, I'm not exactly holding my breath.
At this time I will not be implementing that workaround as we already have "Unassigned" as our default option. I'm not interested in creating a fake user named "Default" as this just creates more data to manage. It would be easier if Hubspot left the real default "Unassigned" setting alone in the first place, instead of asking me to create a fake "Default" setting that is not, in fact, the default.
