Lifecycle Stage Changes When New Deal is Created

I'm noticing that contacts who are designated as a lead- when a new deal is created- the lifecycle stage automatically flips to opportunity. Unfortunately we sync information with another system and can't use that lifecycle stage.

How can I stop that from happening?

You can now disable the feature that automatically makes a contact an opportutiy or customer based on deal stage in your deal settings: Automatically sync lifecycle stages between certain records 

I don't recommend doing this in most cases, but it sounds like it may be necessary in your case.
