How reliable have you found auto contact merging to be?
SOLVE
Under Contacts > Manage Duplicates
How is your experience using this feature? I have used it en masse out of necessity but sometimes when I scroll through the suggested merges manually I see things that make me wonder if it's that accurate, such as Jane Doe and Jane Dome put together, or Jane Doe and Bob Doe put together.
I have just recently started useing Koalify for deduping Contacts and Companies and have found it to be brilliant. It allows you to set the rules for identifying a duplicate contact/company.
It's free for up to 10,000 records and pretty affordable after that too. I highly recommend checking it out.

Which tool / feature exactly do you use for merging contacts? You're absolutely right, deduplication should not be based on first and last name only, there should typically be more criteria to it and I would strongly advise against a first name / last name match deduplication.

It's an Ops Hub feature. I assumed that Hubspot looked at IPs and phone numbers for matching but I'm beginning to wonder if they also match firstname/lastname, which would be disastrous.
I don't have any contacts to show as an example at the moment but here's some companies for example:
