Generally, you can edit the association label by looking at the right sidebar of a contact record, hovering your mouse over the company card and then edit the label:
In this case, you would create an association label for contact to company, and call it primary contact.

How can I associate a contact as a primary contact with a company?
SOLVE
Karsten do you have any idea exactly how the seemingly native "Primary Contact" functionality is supposed to work? We see designated "Primary" contacts on records. The only way to change this is to remove the existing Primary Contact association COMPLETELY (??) and then you get the option to change the Primary Contact for the Company. I've also worked around with a custom Association Label before, but doesn't this seem like it's supposed to be native functionality?

Hey @karstenkoehler , do you if it's possible to automate the process of applying an association label for the first Contact to be associated with a Company?
This is how we identify Primary Contacts in our org, so it would be pretty cool if it could be automated. I haven't been able to figure it out though.
