Email opens are tracked by an image pixel -- i.e., a 1x1 pixel image. While that's the best open tracking currently available in the world (HubSpot included), it's also notoriously unreliable as a true indicator of engagement. This is primarily because email clients control whether or not images are visible. In other words, if an email client is set to disallow images the email will appear to never have been opened.
Email CLICKS, on the other hand, are tracked using code added to each trackable URL in the email. This code isn't dependent on email client settings around image visibility which makes it much more reliable as a true indicator of engagement.
