Create list with ambiguous titles

SOLVE

We are creating a list for a campaign that includes various job functions like COO or IT Manager etc. How do I get all the COO's without also getting all the COOrdinators? The list feature doesn't work as the filter feature does. A filter uses "contains exactly" which gives me all our COO contacts ONLY. While the List filter just uses CONTAINS, which gives me all the COO's plus all the Training Coordinators or Supply Room Coordinators.

Hi @esealpha,

I'd solve it as shown below, either filter group should work:

(COO is usually not followed by anything, hence filter 1 should work. Alternatively, simply add a 'doesn't contain' to exclude coordinators.)

I considered both and ended up with the second. The first won't work (in our case) b/c we have multiple contacts that are COO and something else. Like COO & VP of Sales. Or whatever the case may be. So I opted for the second one hoping there aren't any other titles that use "coo" in the word.

But we also have the same issue with IT or OT. We have IT Managers, IT Specialists, you name it. So we'd just like to add IT to the list. But we also have the same issue where the letters "it" are used in other titles.

Hi @esealpha,

Same approach, just less fun. You'll have to take inventory of job titles that can contain 'IT' and manually exclude them.

Just found a couple more. Cooper, Cook, Coordinator, Cooperation, etc. We even have a "coolBLUE OEM Manager". This would be much easier if HubSpot just included the option to contain exactly, just like their filter criteria.

Hi @esealpha,

That wouldn't solve the issue of a"COO & VP Sales" however. And unfortunately, that option is not available – I'm just sharing what your best option is right now. (Keep in mind I don't work for HubSpot, I'm someone who helps users in the community in his free time.)

I understand.

But to your point, if I filter my contact list by job title that contains exactly COO, it does give me the various combinations of COO and whatever. It brings me COO & CFO, Executive Vice-President, Manufacturing & COO, etc. So it works in the filter from the contact index.

Hi @esealpha,

For some reason, the index page filters and list filters behave differently. I would love to understand why, too, but it seems like it's due to different product teams working on different features in HubSpot.
