Contact - Primary Company association update via import

SOLVE

I want to update the primary company of a contact via an import. Before the update with the secondary company association feature these was possible. However now, when I want to do the update it adds the new company as a secondary instead of removing the primary association and setting the new as the new one.

e.g:
Lets say I have 3 companies
- Hubspot (10 Contacts)
- Hubspot USA (0 Contacts)
- Hubspot GER (0 Contacts)

With the import I want to move these contacts from Hubspot to Hubspot USA and Hubspot GER so that I have:
- Hubspot (0 Contacts)
- Hubspot USA (5 Contacts)
- Hubspot GER (5 Contacts)

The way I do it is just taking the Contact ID and the Company ID and change the Company ID to the new one. Before it used to work but now what happens is that it will set Hubspot USA and Hubspot GER as the secondary company of my contacts. How can I solve this? Thx in advance ❤️

Contact - Primary Company association update via import

The way we solved it was to:

- turn off automatic Company Association

- set the Company domain to null (empty) so HubSpot doesn't de-duplicate; or give the company a fake domain e.g. us.hubspot.com and de.hubspot.com

- manually associate each contact with the appropriate company.

Not ideal but it works.

Have fun

Contact - Primary Company association update via import

SOLVE

Hi everyone,

You should be able to resolve this issue via an import - prepare a .csv file with one column as HubSpot Contact Record ID, another - HubSpot Company Record ID and the third one - "Association" just populated with text "Primary". When importing, choose Record ID for the first two column mapping and choose "Association label" mapping for the last column. I just tested and it worked for me. It won't remove the already associated company but it will update to the correct primary company.

@JannieEngen happy to help! We also use the app Associ8 quite often - you can automate the association labels via workflows with it if the standard options don't work.

I run into the same problem. I guess there is no elegant way to do this (based on Mike's reply), so maybe something like this:

1. Create a list of all contacts where you want to replace the Primary association

2. Remove all associations with a workflow.

3. Upload primary associations

4. Upload secondary associations

I will try this approach, see if it works.

It does, however it really is too much work for such a simple thing that worked perfectly before the "Secondary association" feature was added.
