Company Parent property

What is the purpose of the Parent property on the Company record? It's a free-form field that isn't linked to the Parent/Child association. Seems redundant and confusing.

There are quite a few cases like this. 

Contacts have a Company Name property that is not linked to associated company, etc. 

I guess is to allow users to choose how they use the CRM, with objects stand-alone or interlinked.
