Company Name Field on Contact - Point?

What is the point of the Company Name Field on a Contact? 

How should I be using it?

Hi - I'm having the same issue. Please can someone explain the logic of having a 'Company name' free text field as well as the 'associated' Company (i.e. that is a lookup to existing companies)? And is there a way to hide / delete the free text 'Company name' field, as I think this would create confusion (i.e. people looking here rather than associated company, sometimes seeing blanks etc)?

@BérangèreL I'm interested to see if there is a way to automatically update the Object: Contact Property: Company Name to reflect the Object: Company Property: Name (as in company name) if it's associated. Do you know of a way to do this?

@nychd  Great question! This mainly serves as a data point that is visible on the contact record, used in reporting, workflows, and more! 

It does seem a bit redundant to have a field on the contact level for company name if there is a company associated to the contact but it does help to have this data point accessible at a core contact level.

On this topic, I have another question:
For some reason, some of my contacts have the company name property filled out, and some of them don't. Is this property filled out automatically by hubspot? If so, when does it get filled out?
I'm asking this because I have a custom report tha uses the company name field, and sometimes, for some data point, the company name field says "no data" and it's frustrating to have to go back and manually check each of the contacts and fill out the company name.
If i'm able to figure out what exactly triggers the company name to be filled out, I could fix the issue and not have to manually fix them everytime i have to update the report.

Does it dynamically update when the primary company is changed? It doesn't seem to, but maybe I'm crazy.

In salesforce land we'd use a lookup for something like this.

Just to clarify, these are two separate and different things:

1/ There is the contact property "Company name"
Here is an article "HubSpot's default contact properties" that explains this property:

"Company name: the name of the contact's company. This is separate from the Name property of the contact's associated company, and the Associated company shown on the contacts index page. This property is not affected by automatic association or manual association and can be manually updated regardless of company associations."

2/ There is a company record that you can associate with the contact record.

how do i have the company associated added to the contact section as it does not appear in the contact section
