HTTP request.search_engine variable

I am trying to capture data using the request.search_engine variable but I have tried everything I can think of to populate it and tried visiting the site using a couple different search engines, but there is never data. How exactly is this variable meant to populate?

Right now I am just trying to ouput {{request.search_engine}} but it's always blank.
