What exactly is the purpose of a CNAME in hubspot?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but I am NOT IT literate at all.
What does updating the CNAME in DNS of a main website accomplish within hubspot? what are the key functionalities that rely on it? what are the use cases?

@POusley Connecting a CNAME record allows you to host web versions of emails, landing pages, and blogs.
If you plan on using hubspot to host these marketing-focused web assets then it is highly recommended to add the CNAMEs to the root domain host.
Not adding these would result in your landing pages, blogs, and emails in hubspot containing strings like: hubspotpagebuilder.com, hs-sites, hs-email, etc

Hi @POusley Where do you currently host your website, landing page, files, videos, graphics, and emails? If you're hosting it on HubSpot, you should have a CNAME record pointing to your domain. Here's how you can do it in HubSpot.
CNAME & CDN are two different things. CDN stands for content delivery network. You can use HubSpot Content Delivery Network (CDN) domain for hosting, or customize a file's URL to be hosted on any of your domains connected in HubSpot.
For example, you want to share the PDF via HubSpot. Connecting a domain with HubSpot gives you the ability to use your brand domain.

one more questions, how does this affect email fuctionality of hubspot? from the users linking email to marketing and support hub automated emails? is it just the strings that would look like you said or does it affect anything else?

@POusley Adding a CNAME in DNS accomplishes the ability to host other pages and web asset types within HubSpot that contain your root domain such as: pages.yourcompany.com, blog.yourcompany.com, etc
Here are some common ways CNAME records are used:
to point several websites owned by a single entity or organization to its primary website;
to provide a separate hostname for different network services like File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or email, pointing each hostname to the root domain;
to provide subdomains for each customer on a single service provider's domain and use the CNAME to point the subdomain to the customer's root domain; and
to register the same domain in several countries and point each country-specific version to the main domain.
