UTM's stored in First Referring Site, but not reflected in Lead Source (Direct Traffic instead)

Hi,

the leads coming in via our AdWords campaigns are recorded under "Direct Traffic" instead of Paid Search.

In the Form Confirmation email I clearly see it's a lead coming from AdWords because of the UTM's, but when I check out the lead record in Hubspot, I see it's Original Source is Direct Traffic.

Other campaigns we run on Capterra do get recorded under Paid Search, using a similar UTM structure.

Support says "Form submissions can be categorized as direct traffic for a few reasons. If the contact's cookie was not able to be passed through it can be categorized as direct traffic", but then again, the Referring Site is still there, and I guess that's stored in a Cookie, right?

The propsed workflow works for updating the Original Source Value, but we are still missing google campaign and ad group attribution for about half of our Adword leads. We could use a similiar workflow trigger to set a custom field (Ad Campaign) value based Contains Utm-campaign If branches, but it would take dozens of branches and would be a pain to maintain as we ad new campaigns. My workaround idea is to export all the leads to a google sheet and extract the campaigns from the First Reffering URL using this formula:  IFERROR(SUBSTITUTE(REGEXEXTRACT(First reffering URL Cell, "utm_campaign=([^&]+)"), "+", " "), ""). Then uploading them back in. But that is also a ton of manual recurring work to fix attribution that HS should get right in the first place.

Also with HS's UTM presets, there is no way to get adgroup with this method.

Thank you @Dorokhov , this works! For us we have a couple more sources we need to check for aside from Paid Search, including Social and Organic and differing keywords from google and capterra, but the logic here works.

There's a workaround with a simple workflow (attached) that may help with reporting.

Hello, we are experiencing the same issue. Contacts are being recorded in HubSpot as Original source: direct traffic, when the first referring site URL clearly shows that they have come through from Paid Social or Paid Social.

It doesn't make sense that the user would need to 'convert' within 15 minutes for it to be recorded as Paid Search for example (I don't see the relevance). This would render the data inaccurate and not true to the original source, making it extremely difficult to track traffic and analyse traffic sources.

Having this exact issue as well. Were you able to resolve this?

Hello @Zakir , could you please provide us more information in what is happening on your end specifically? As @Aleeson mentioned "There is a required timeframe that someone has to convert within (I believe it's 15 minutes, but I don't have a source on-hand) after clicking the ad, otherwise, it will list as Direct Traffic, Original Source Drill-Down 2: [conversion page]. Do you have a comparable example of someone who was attributed as Paid Search that you could show?"

The more information, screenshots, and details you can provide, the better I can advise on the next steps.

Thank you.

Pam

Hey Joris-

I see what you mean- our hsa UTMs are being applied, so we know that the contact did come from a HubSpot-connected ad. I'd be curious to see their Last Referring Site, and the "pathway" that leads them to Conversion.

I don't have a source on this one, though I have encountered it during my own work as a Support Specialist: There is a required timeframe that someone has to convert within (I believe it's 15 minutes, but I don't have a source on-hand) after clicking the ad, otherwise it will list as Direct Traffic, Original Source Drill-Down 2: [conversion page]. Do you have a comparable example of someone who was attributed as Paid Search that you could show?
