changing field format

I have a numeric field that needs to be converted to an alphanumeric field. It looks like I don't have that option. Any idea?

with the latest update to the properties, a fields type cannot be changed if a contact has a value set. You will need to create a new property.

My field type can not be changed because it is in use.  😞

so basically I need a new field and to move all the numbers plus a letter into the new field. 

maybe this isn't so bad and it can be done with export and reimport.
