oauth - Couldn’t complete the connection An error occurred while validating the app authorization.

I have created a developer and test account and a test app.

I copied the client_id, client_secret from the app-> auth section. I have added scopes related to contacts in auth section. I tried to connect to app with ruby. 

I am getting below error

Couldn’t complete the connection

An error occurred while validating the app authorization.

Am I missing something?

Has same issue, and it was due to not adding oauth in the scope section, which appears under standard section in scopes.
