Set a default value for a custom property

juancruzbasebon
Member

Hi friends!!

I have a custom property as a dropdown select which now it's binary (we don't know if it will handle other values in the future, so that's why it's a dropdown instead of a checkbox or a radio button). I only want to handle one of those two values: YES or NO. No empty values, no both values. The fallback should stay on NO, but I can't find (if it exists) a "default" value to this kind of selector. There's a setup window for this that I've missed?

BTW, the companies should come from API, form, tracked email.... I can control it via API, of course, but I need to control the other two sources

Hi HubSpot Community,

I'm Sabrina from HubSpot's product team. We're looking into having Default Values as part of our roadmap. We'll keep you posted as we make progress toward this goal.

Hello @juancruzbasebon and everyone,

This is now possible! https://app-eu1.hubspot.com/l/product-updates/?rollout=285026

Set default property values

What is it?

You can now set default values for properties in HubSpot. When creating or editing a property, admins can define a value that will automatically be applied whenever a new record is created.

Default property values are applied consistently across HubSpot—whether records are created manually, through workflows, or via APIs—so commonly used values are automatically set, saving users a step and keeping data consistent.

Why does it matter?

Many teams rely on the same values being set repeatedly when creating records. Without default values, this often leads to repetitive manual entry, inconsistent data, or complex workflows built just to fill in the blanks.

With default property values, you can:

  • Save time by pre-filling commonly used values
  • Reduce data gaps and “unknown” states
  • Eliminate workflow workarounds used solely to initialize data
  • Improve overall data quality and consistency from the moment a record is created
      •

This makes record creation faster for end users and data management simpler for admins.

How does it work?

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings icon in the top navigation bar
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Properties
  3. Select an existing property (or create a new property)
  4. Click the Field type tab
  5. Set a default value for the property
  6. Once you're ready, click Save (or click Create if creating a new property)

Once set:

  • The default value is automatically applied to all newly created records
  • Users can still change the value during record creation if needed
  • The default applies everywhere records are created, including via manual entry, workflows, and APIs
karstenkoehler_4-1769576376496.png

What’s not included

Default values are not currently supported for the following property field types:

  • Calculations
  • Rollups
  • Syncs
  • Files

Who gets it?

All hubs and tiers

Hello Karsten, this is a great feature!
I just have a question, we've enabled the beta and already have a dropdown property with a default value selected.

Will that default value be kept once the feature goes live?
Or will we need to set again the default value in that same dropdown property?

Best regards,

André Pires.

Hi @AndrePires,

It’s great to hear that you’re enjoying the new default property values beta!

To answer your question: the default value you’ve set for that dropdown property will stay in place even after the feature leaves beta.

There’s no need to make any changes, it will continue working as the default for new records.

I hope this helps!

Hi @JeannieN

Will this update allow me to set the default value of a Custom Property (ENUM) using the property definition, via API?

Curiously

Hi @Mike_Eastwood, this is not yet available to set via API, but it's on our roadmap for this year! We're still in beta and monitoring feedback before we continue to add enhancements.

Hey @JOlsen24 - thanks for following up here!

It does look like this is applicable to all property types, but you will need to join the Beta linking in @karstenkoehler's message to see this function in your portal. Feel free to let us know if you have any troubles doing so!

It's amazing to me that Hubspot can build something as complex as they have and not included something as basic as a default value on a form. The fact that this needs to be prioritized and put on a roadmap is kind of ridiculous. This is a no brainer.

Hi @CHar06

Thank you for your feedback ! Right now,  we can set a default value in form fields that use dropdown select , multiple checkbox, or radio select field type by pre-selecting the value within the form editor:

Full steps for how to achieve this in the new form builder are included on this KB article.  On the other hand, if you goal is to pre-set values when filling our a property value in the CRM, our Product team is currently researching adding this feature into the product roadmap. I encourage you to participate in their research to develop this solution by filling out the form @sapang linked on this comment

Let us know if you need any help !

Cheers,

You can use copilot to create a workflow.  I used this prompt: set a custom property to the same value for every new deal

Scoobs

A teammember just asked me to set the default to yes for a document that is received on every new contract. To my surprise there is no option to select a default value. Please add a checkbox next to the custom values that will allow us to select a default value. Should be easy for the dev team of a amazing solution like HubSpot.

Hey, @Scoobs If you have a moment, can you add your use case and comment to this Idea post—Pre-set Default Property Value, please? It is making the same feature request as described in this thread and in your comment. — Jaycee

Is there a solution?

We have a follow up workflow system with contacts. New contacts generated by Mail API connection we need to flag so that they DO NOT get included automatically on the follpw up workflow.

Today we have to update manually, with the risk of missing some or create e new workflow.

A default value option for the field would be a very yseful if not expected feature.

We are having the same issue. I have a calculating property that sums a series of deal properites. However, the calculating property itself won't work if any of the deal properties included in the calculation is blank (not yet completed). Each of the deal properties included in the calculating property must have a value of zero or greater. This is a problem becuase those deal properties are completed sequentially and the user won't be completing the later sequence properties until months into the deal/project. To make this work, I understand we will need to create a workflow to populate the deal properties with the value of zero so that the calculating field will work from the start of the project (Deal).

We should not have to do this through workflows.  This is especially the case for Number fields that are being used for calculating other fields.  Since Calculation fields break if any of their calculated fields are empty, being able to set these Number fields to 0 as a default value would allow these fields to be used to Calculate values.
