Populate hubspot owner / hubspot user through formsAPI

A contact property with the field type "hubspot user" can not be used in a form. This makes it difficult when using formsAPI and you want Hubspot to receive a contact owner from another system. Maybe it could work if we created a dropdown select with all of our users and then created a workflow that copies the value from that dropdown select field into the contact owner field. But that would be a nightmare to keep updated when having a lot of users. Ideas?
