List command in contacts API returns null values for custom fields

When I create a custom field and change some values in contacts and use the list command of the contacts API (and listing my fields in the properties parameter) to retrieve this information, all my custom fields return null values for all contacts. It recognizes the field was created since it starts to show up in the JSON response, however. When using the read command to get these fields for a single contact, these values are returned properly (non-null where they have been changed). How can I retrieve this information for all contacts?
