Limitation of association of custom object

I wanted to know how many objects of a custom object can be associated to an object like company for example?

As of today, the limit of associations for custom objects is 10,000

Let me just ask for clarification: 10k from ONE custom object entry A to (lets say) 10k contacts? But custom object b then has 10k again? Or can there generally be no more than 10k relationships between custom objects and contact. Thank you

Apologies for lack of clarity on my part.  The limit is imposed per record, not the Object as a whole
