Getting the count of email subscribers through the api

Hello! Hopefully a simple question. I'm just getting my feet wet HS apis work. I have a client who wants to display the number of email subscribers she has on a page on her site. I'm basically going to use ajax so that the count will update when the number of subscribers change but after much research I'm not sure what the endpoint url should be. Any guidance would help. Thanks in advance.
