Custom datetime field set via API displaying as a date field in CRM

I have a datetime field set by the API.

 

However, in my contact preview and sidebar, the field is displaying with a datepicker and as a date. Therefore the time part is hidden.

 

I've checked the property data, and a datetime is being set. The field should be displayed as a text field according to the docs.

 

Is there a bug with this? or have I setup up something incorrectly?
