Chat messages aren't persistent between pages

I am using Nextjs and for whatever reason messages are not being saved between route changes.

However if I let the page load and then refresh the page the messages will work as expected and will be persistent between pages. Not sure why this is, but I noticed in the network tab that a GET request is fired off when working properly to https://hubspot-rest.ably.io/channels/thread

This request does not happen on subsequent widget loads unless I refresh the page.

Obviously I don't want to have the users refresh their page in order to get their chat to work properly. 

Any ideas why this is happening?
