Emails sent automatically via workflow should appear by default on the contact record. If you filter the timeline by "Marketing Emails" you should see something similar to this:
Marketing email events will not show up on deal records. One to one emails (sales emails) will show up on deal records. In short:
Marketing Email Activity - visible on contact record
Sales Email (one to one) Activity - visible on both contact and deal records

I only see Marketing (Automated) emails on the Contact Activities Timeline if a Workflow sent them. If a Marketing Email was sent to an individual Contact, it does not appear! [Scratching my head]
