Accessing a protected RSS Feed

We are using CMS and have a protected RSS feed. I need to read the feed programatically. 

Can I pass credentials or a valid cookie using a parameterized URL and get the XML of the feed returned? 

My feed reader has a settings to specify proxy details: User,Password, Server, Port. Can this be used? Where would I find the settings to configure this?
