A Recap of Last Weeks Data Sync by HubSpot AMA

Last week we held an amazing Live AMA on Data Sync by HubSpot. Our two guests were the two Belgian integration experts: @EwoutM & @FransLeys.

Ewout Meyns joined us as he is former PieSync CEO and current HubSpot Product Manager of Data Sync by HubSpot and Frans used to be PieSync's Solution Engineer and is currently specialist of Operations Hub's Go-To-Market.

Here are a couple of the questions they answered!

What was the relationship between PieSync and HubSpot before the acquisition?

Ewout: PieSync has always been inspired by HubSpot. For starters, from the very beginning, we wanted PieSync to be an easy-to-use tool that's completely self-service and that relied on HubSpot's inbound marketing methodologies. We never hired a single sales rep.

When we built the HubSpot integration back in 2016, we started seeing the opportunity of integrating with a fast-growing platform like HubSpot. It took us a while though to get on their radar. We needed 50 customers using the integration to start partnering with them. When we got that, we got in touch with a lot of people internally, which helped build out our relation with HubSpot.

What were the two years after the acquisition? Was it always the plan to build Data Sync by HubSpot?

Ewout: The only conclusion I can make is that the acquisition was a big success. I'm personally very impressed with HubSpot and their company culture and the way they managed us after the acquisition. And that's not just a candid statement. Not a single PieSync employee left the team after the acquisition. We're seeing very high employee NPS scores and everyone is just very motivated to continue building out that sync vision.

When we joined HubSpot, the plan was to continue PieSync and building on that sync engine until the time came that we could confidently integrate the PieSync technology into the HubSpot platform. I personally think it's very excited to see our technology being distributed on a much larger scale.

What were the decisions made to facilitate and implement new technology like Data Sync in HubSpot?

Frans: Very early on the marketplace seemed like the most logical place to be positioning Data Sync. Sync is not new. PieSync was already available on the HubSpot marketplace and there are a lot of other sync alternatives out there. We wanted to give people the option of choice, so therefore the Marketplace looked like the logical choice.

We did decide to improve the way in which integrations are listed in Marketplace to make sure that to the user it is super clear and transparent what the sync will do and most importantly what it will not do. You can now see exactly which objects can be synced, what filters there are, and what fields can be mapped.

Is deal sync on the roadmap?

Ewout: Without making any promises I can say that supporting more objects, like deals, tickets, products, is a very big priority for us. We're very excited about that. At PieSync we never really were able to support more objects than contacts and companies. Being able to sync contacts generically between hundreds of apps is in its own right already very complex, so you can imagine that syncing objects like deals that have associations with other objects like companies and contacts, is on a whole other level of complexity. But I'm happy to let you know that our sync engine is ready to support that now. So stay tuned!

What is the vision for the marketplace when there are other integrations built by external vendors to the same business app (eg. Zendesk)? Will these continue to exist?

Frans: They will continue to exist. Zendesk is good example. The existing Zendesk integration essentially does one thing, which is pushing the Zendesk tickets into HubSpot. The Zendesk Data Sync integration does not do that. Data Sync only syncs contact information at this time. So you can actually use both of these integration complementary.

Like Ewout mentioned, we plan on supporting more and more objects and that may conflict with existing integrations built by these vendors. What our dream for it is, is that we in time want to open it up for other vendors to use, so that they can use the data sync engine to build their own custom integrations and make them more natively connected with HubSpot.
