When I create workflow branches there are huge gaps. Note that this screenshot is at the 30% zoom level, the most zoomed out. It’s very inconvenient to have branches separated by so much space. I don’t understand why this happens--there is nothing in the way of those actions.
Solution: Either having better logic for automatically determining the gaps, or (my preference) having the ability to manually position workflow actions.

I would assume that whats coming below is causing these branches to look like this – could you please share a screenshot of the entire workflow?
In any case, yes, I agree, the workflow editor should notice that there is no reason for these gaps to be so wide and optimize the occupied space.
