I want to create association labels for contacts so that we can label their role within the company. E.g. IT tech, champion, firm manager, etc. I go to create a contact-company association, single label - but when I create the association, it also creates this as an option for companies. I don’t need companies to be labeled with any of these and I don’t want the options showing up. These are contact specific labels. What am I doing wrong? I tried setting the company label limit in step two of creation to 0, but 1 is the minimum.
There are 2 ways of doing associations
One is where the same label is on both objects - the other where each object can have its own label
One is for describing a single relationship between 2 objects - the other for multiple
The first you could have “Colleague” and it would show on the Company Association card in the Contact record, and the Contact Association card in the Company record
For the other, you could have “Manager” and then “Contractor” and one would show on the Company Association card in the Contact record, and the other on the Contact Association card in the Company record
If objects are related in the same way, they can have the same label - otherwise, if they are related in different ways they can use their own labels
If you just want to record Contacts Job Titles there is a Hubspot default property for that
Otherwise, the association labels will show on both objects since it is describing the relationship between the 2 objects
You’re not doing anything wrong, the feature of association labels is simply designed this way:
If you choose a single label, then the role will both show up on the contact card and the company card.
If you choose a pair of labels, you would have to specify the company end of it as well.
There are a few things you could do now:
Choose a single label and accept the fact that it’s displayed in both directions. (You could request from the product team that single labels can be hidden on one side of the assocation by submitting a post here: https://community.hubspot.com/t5/HubSpot-Ideas/idb-p/HubSpot_Ideas)
Choose a pair of labels and give the company side a generic name, e.g. “Primary company”. (This could in fact help if someone is the CEO of multiple companies and you want to designate which ones primary, which one secondary etc.)
Use a contact property instead of an association label. (Unless you regularly have contacts who have a role towards multiple companies and need to be able to filter for a role regarding one specific associated company, a contact field will do perfectly fine.)
